A bedrock principle embedded in the origins of Newport Rowing Club is the idea that parents of student athletes should have the opportunity, and indeed be encouraged, to participate in the management and affairs of the Club. Accordingly, the Club’s Bylaws provide for a vibrant committee structure designed to be staffed primarily by parents, which will provide recommendations and develop policies touching every aspect of the Club’s affairs. These committees are summarized below:

Finance Committee. The Finance Committee reviews the annual operation and capital budget prepared and presented under the direction of the Treasurer of the Club and makes recommendations to the Board with respect the budget. The Finance Committee also reviews major financial or property transactions not provided for in the budget and submits proposed variances to the Board of Directors.

Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee proposes candidates for consideration by the whole Board of Directors to fill the seats of directors and officers upon any vacancy.

Recruiting Committee. The Recruiting Committee develops programs and policies designed to attract suitable candidates for inclusion in athletic programs sponsored by the Club.

Building and Facilities Committee. The Building and Facilities Committee is responsible for developing policies and recommendations with respect to the acquisition, construction, maintenance and upkeep of all buildings, structures and facilities owned, leased, occupied or used by the Club, or proposed to be owned, leased, occupied or used by the Club.

Equipment Committee. The Equipment Committee is responsible for developing policies and recommendations with respect to the acquisition, maintenance, upkeep and disposal of equipment owned, leased or operated by the Club.

Programs Committee. The Programs Committee is responsible for developing policies and recommendations with respect to races, competitions and events in which the Club’s participating athletes may compete or participate, and shall further develop policies and recommendations for the establishment and promotion of one or more events to be hosted and promoted by the Club.

Financial Development Committee. The Financial Development Committee is responsible for developing policies and recommendations with respect to the pursuit and development of charitable donations and corporate sponsorships.

Financial Aid Committee. The Financial Aid Committee is responsible for developing policies and recommendations with respect to the timing, amount and eligibility of and for financial aid to athletes participating, or proposing to participate, in the Club’s programs.

Safety and Policy Committee. The Safety and Policy Committee is responsible for developing policies and recommendations with respect to screening procedures for prospective employees, coaches and volunteers, boating and on-the-water safety rules, safe practices relating to the Club’s facilities and events in which the Club’s participating athletes participate, and other matters related to the safety and security of the Club’s participating athletes. The Safety and Policy Committee shall further identify and/or develop all waiver, certification and other forms to be utilized in connection with the admission of participating athletes.

Additionally, the Board recently created a Merchandizing Committee which will identify merchandise for sale to rowers, parents and others. This committee will establish a budget, decide what to sell, how to sell it, work with the merchandise vendors, keep track of inventory, establish merchandise “branding” policy/guidelines, and so forth.

We believe that the skills, talent and industry that only YOU can provide will make NRC the best rowing club in the mid-Atlantic. Please look over these committees and consider volunteering your time and energy to your Club.
