Novice and Middle School Coaches - August 26, 2020

We are happy to welcome back Newport alumni Sid Dhir ('17) and Emily Marvel ('18) to coach the Middle School and Novice program this fall!

A note from our new coaches:

"Hey what’s up guys my name is Sid Dhir, I am currently at West Chester University studying Biomedical Engineering. I went to Salesianum High School and graduated in 2017. During that time, I rowed all 4 of my years at Newport Rowing Club. I started out as a novice and have rowed and raced in every boat from an 8 to a single. I am excited to come back and help out with our next generation of NRC athletes!"

"Hello! My name is Emily Marvel and I am currently a Biology major at the University of Delaware! I went to Padua and graduated in 2018. I rowed at Newport Rowing Club for all 4 years, then continued on to row at the University of Delaware for a year and a half. I also had the pleasure of coaching the summer program at Newport last year. I love the sport and am so excited to get involved again!"

We're Back! - August 21, 2020

We are SO happy to announce that Newport Rowing Club will be having a season this fall, and we are no longer dissolving the club! A big thank you goes out to our parents and the Board of Directors for their support and hard work in pulling this off so quickly.

This fall season is going to look a little different than those in the past, and we are developing a COVID-19/social distanced land training plan that would include as many water practices as possible.

Our Newport staff this fall includes myself and John Tierney (JT).

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Jess Crosby, and I will be taking over as Head Coach at the club. I started my rowing career as a coxswain at NRC in 2013. I was recruited to cox for the Women's Rowing team at Saint Joseph's University in 2015, and graduated in 2019. During my summers in college, I coached the Developmental Sculling program at Crescent Boat Club on Boathouse row, and helped with the summer rowing program at SJU. After graduation, I coached for Conestoga Crew Club on the Schuylkill as the Head Novice Coach. I am so excited to be back on the Christina!

John Tierney (JT) will also be coaching at the club this fall. John started rowing on the River Thames, at Hammersmith, for St. Clement Danes Grammar School and Furnivall Sculling Club in 1964. He continued rowing at Reading University representing the university successfully in both four and eight-oared events. In 1974 he came to Philadelphia and Temple University to study for a Ph.D. in organic chemistry. He represented Vesper Boat Club at national and international regattas as well as coaching the Intermediate and Senior programs each summer between 1979 and 1985. Some of his achievements in his impressive rowing career include his time as a Rowing Team Leader for the US National Team from 1986-1991. His daughter Lanie, rowed for Newport (class of '17) and other daughter, Emma, also coached for NRC, and then John joined the coaching staff in 2017. He also serves on the Board at Vesper Boat Club and he still occasionally gets in a boat to row with former crewmates from way back when.

Thank you to Coaches John and Naomi, as they move on to their next adventures in life. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into the club over the years!
