Newport Rowing Club’s Learn-to-Row Camp is an opportunity to learn a new life-long sport in a fun environment. The camp is open to kids entering 6th grade through 12th grade with little to no experience. Campers will learn the basics of the rowing stroke beginning on the indoor rowing machines. Guided by NRC’s experienced coaching staff and with the assistance of current athletes, the campers will then learn to row on the water. Campers will learn basic safety skills, oar handling, and the language of rowing through fun activities and guided drills on the water. Current NRC athletes will sandwich our on-the-water training with athletic games and stretching.
At NRC’s Learn-to-Row Camp, campers learn both sculling, with two oars per rower, and sweep, with one. Sculling keeps your body balanced and reduces the potential for injuries in young athletes, as many of them are still rowing. Sculling in small boats also accelerates the learning curve as these boats are more sensitive to small changes. This allows the campers to see immediate effects to the changes they are making and learn at a faster pace. Our camp is coached by some of the same coaches who work with our competitive athletes during the year as well as several our alumni who have gone on to row in college.
Newport Rowing Club was founded in 2010 by Head Coach John Cohn with a focus on competitive rowing at a high level that would give its athletes every opportunity to meet their goals in rowing. In the years since, the Newport Rowing Club has sent 17 crews to the USRowing Youth National Championships. NRC has also sent multiple athletes to compete internationally with the United States Under 23 and Junior National teams. NRC continues to instill the values of athleticism, sportsmanship, and healthy competition in all its athletes.
For many NRC athletes, the Learn-to-Row Camp is their first experience with the unique sport of rowing. The camp creates a sound foundation for them to build upon should they choose to move through NRC’s subsequent programs. Newport Rowing Club offers a healthy continuation of the knowledge and skills instilled during the Learn-to-Row Camps through Middle School and High School programs. Many kids who started out in these camps have continued rowing through High School, going on to earn college scholarships all over the country.
Patience, perseverance, and drive are skills that are necessary throughout a person’s life. Rowing naturally teaches these skills at a high level and Newport Rowing Club’s Learn-to-row Camp can be a fun first step in exploring this exciting and wonderful sport.
